For a first adult passport you have to be 16 years of age and never previously held a UK Passport. You must apply in person and you will need to attend an interview as part of the application process. Call 0800 056 6654 to make an appointment for an interview. It can take up to 6 weeks for a first passport to be issued.

To apply for a first passport you must provide:

• 1 x application form
• 2 x photographs
• Original Birth Certificate*
• Original Marriage Certificate (Women only)
• Naturalisation Certificate and dual passport if applicable

The application and one photograph only to be countersigned by a professional person who has know the applicant for 2+ years, they must also hold a valid British/Irish passport.

Persons born outside the UK to British parents must produce either the fathers' Birth Certificate or British Passport and the parents' Marriage Certificate.

*Birth Certificates must be more than two years old (except children) otherwise two other proofs of original identification are required. (Driving Licence, Medical Card, NHS Card or Benefit Book).
